Firefighters Host Texas Tailgaters as Banana Ball Makes Its Syracuse Debut

  • The Firefighters host the Texas Tailgaters at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse on September 11 and 12, the city’s first look at the six-team Banana Ball Championship League.
  • Both teams entered the week tied at 23-26 in the last published standings, part of a four-team cluster fighting the Savannah Bananas and Texas for a spot in the Banana Bowl.
  • Both Syracuse dates sold out through the league’s ticket lottery, with standard seats starting at $35 before resale prices climbed past that mark.

A New Stadium Joins Banana Ball’s Coast to Coast Run

NBT Bank Stadium has hosted plenty of loud nights for the Syracuse Mets, but nothing quite like what lands on the field this week. The Firefighters and Texas Tailgaters play two games at the ballpark on September 11 and 12, the first time the Banana Ball Championship League has brought a regular season series to Central New York. Fans here got a preview of the original Savannah Bananas world tour in 2023, when the same stadium sold out for an exhibition night. This time the games count. A trophy sits at the end of the season, and both teams need the wins to get anywhere near it.

Both dates sold out through Banana Ball’s ticket lottery system, a process fans had to enter by the end of October 2025 for a shot at buying in. Standard tickets started at $35. By the time the calendar turned to September, seats on the secondary market were going for several times that price, a pattern that has followed the league into nearly every city on its 75 stop, 45 state schedule this year.

A Standings Race Neither Team Can Afford to Lose

The Firefighters and Tailgaters walk into Syracuse from very different places in the season. Texas already locked up the league’s Open Championship, a mid season tournament that guarantees its winner a spot in the playoffs no matter what happens the rest of the way. That security has not stopped the Tailgaters from playing out the string with intent. In the last published standings, Texas sat at 27-22, a half game ahead of the Savannah Bananas and just a game and a half in front of the surging Loco Beach Coconuts.

The Firefighters occupy messier territory. Their 23-26 record ties them with the Party Animals, four games back of Texas, but the two clubs have been moving in opposite directions. Standings released in mid-August showed the Firefighters riding a four game winning streak, the longest active run in the league at the time, while the Party Animals had dropped four straight. That kind of form can flip a season. Banana Ball uses total trick plays and point differential as tiebreakers when records end up level, and the Firefighters have work to do there too: their minus-27 point differential is the worst of the six teams, even with the recent hot streak.

Texas brings the opposite profile. The Tailgaters lead the league with 637 successful trick plays and carry a plus-21 point differential, the best mark in Banana Ball. If the season comes down to a tiebreaker, Texas built itself a cushion most teams cannot match.

What to Expect Inside NBT Bank Stadium

Banana Ball games run on a two hour clock, whatever the score, unless extra innings force a finish. Bunting is illegal. A batter can steal first base standing still. A fan who catches a foul ball in the stands records an out for the defense. None of that changes for Syracuse, and neither does the show built around it: choreographed dances between innings, walk up songs picked for laughs as much as hype, and a cast of players who spend as much time working the crowd as they do playing defense.

Gates open well ahead of first pitch to let fans move through security and grab a seat in general admission sections, and Banana Ball’s Fans First program keeps the vast majority of tickets in that open seating format rather than reserved rows. Local vendors typically join the stadium’s regular concessions lineup for these tour stops, adding another layer of city flavor to a show that changes very little from park to park but always tries to feel like it belongs to the town hosting it.

The Firefighters were one of the three original touring teams, alongside the Savannah Bananas and Party Animals, before the league expanded to six clubs this year with the additions of the Loco Beach Coconuts and Indianapolis Clowns. Texas joined the tour a year later and built its own identity fast, leaning into tailgate culture and a rowdier, football-adjacent atmosphere that plays well in the same NFL and college stadiums Banana Ball now visits alongside minor league parks like NBT Bank Stadium. Neither team carries the name recognition of the Bananas, but both have found their own following on the tour, and Syracuse gets to see that rivalry up close for the first time.

The ticket lottery system that filled NBT Bank Stadium months in advance has become the league’s standard approach as it grows into stadiums that would otherwise sell out in minutes. Fans register for a chance to buy rather than compete in a straight online rush, a structure Banana Ball adopted to spread access across a fan base that now includes people who would never have described themselves as baseball fans before discovering the tour on social media. Syracuse’s two dates are part of a run of 75 stops across 45 states this year, a scale that would have sounded improbable when the Bananas were playing to a mostly empty stadium in Georgia less than a decade ago.

The Road to Washington Runs Through Central New York

Every result this month feeds into the same destination: the first Banana Bowl, set for October 10 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Banana Ball spokesperson Sam Bauman called the game “another huge step for Banana Ball” when the site was announced, adding that it “marks the first championship of the Banana Ball Championship League era, and bringing that game to Washington, D.C. gives us an incredible stage to celebrate how far Banana Ball has come and where we’re headed next.”

For the Firefighters, two wins in Syracuse would pull them level with the top of the standings’ middle tier and put real pressure on the Party Animals heading into the final weeks. For Texas, already through to the playoffs, the games are a chance to keep sharpening the trick play totals that could decide seeding if the bottom of the bracket ends up tied. Six weeks remain before Washington. Central New York gets to watch two teams try to make the most of them.
